Despite the fact Van Helsing was commonly a supporting hero in more than forty vampire films, now he becomes a central character. He is to assist beautiful, sword-wielding Anna who is the last descendant of vampire-fighting clan, to slay the ominous count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh) having dispatched his monsters, namely the Wolf Man (Will Kemp), and Frankenstein's Monster (Shuler Hensley). Having convinced the distrustful peasants of his utility as the deliverer from the evil ones, Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) comes into the fierce confrontation with three Dracula's brides, powerful and dissolute viragos who embellish the movie bringing in a spirit of the perishable lust. Considering an almost immense budget, special-effects in this movie are quite impressive along with admirable Kate Beckinsale's cute character and the handsome long-haired Hugh Jackman in his heydays.

Talk about a movie that hasn't aged well. I saw it in theaters and love it enough but when I saw it again on DVD most of that love had faded and now just a scant four years later I wonder why I loved it so much in the first place. I think seeing things in theater blinds me into liking crappy movies more then I should.

Outrageous and Extreme. It seems to me that Stephen Sommers is all about action and not much else interests him. Though I must admit that he can direct some good action sequences in the past that can leap out of the screens but even that does not amount to the title of a good action movie. In most instances his action direction is too fast and too furious to make a lasting impact. Take The Mummy Returns for example with the double-decker bus chase scene. With Van Helsing we are given the same treatment in many of its action sequence. For instance, the horse-carriage sequence. While its all fun to watch but if you were to ask me to reference each shot or the finer details of the scene than you'll have little luck. Now, if you were to ask me about some of the great action sequence from Indiana Jones, Speed, Die Hard, etc... than I may be able to help you out on that. Basically, that's the differential. While they may have spent over $100 million on the movie, the budget invested on the script was less than $1 dollar, IMO. Most of the lines were totally bad, evil even. Van Helsing shoulda done a Van Helsing on the Van Helsing screenplay. For example: "If you want to kill someone, just kill them. Don't just talk about it." Another distracting aspect of the movie were the phony accents used by the actors (Beckinsale & Roxbergh). Van Helsing is watchable, but also forgettable.

Style over substance in this gothic actioner, less a "rip-roaring tribute to the classics," more a parody of the genre, encompassing Dracula, Frankenstein, werewolf and Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde. That said, there are some good action sequences (if overloaded with CGI), and Hugh Jackman makes a likeable action hero in the titular role, with Richard Roxburgh turning in an enjoyably hammy villain performance.

Such a cool idea, I love it, but they wrecked it. The start is great, in the village against the vamp brides and the black and white homage to Hammer at the very start was so good. The werewolves look amazing ( best since American Werewolf in London) but Dracula is sooo camp, Frankenstein's monster is shit and eggs hatching into vamps?? what the hell! Beckinsale is white hot and Jackman is a good hero, but they just loose the whole film from the midway point, it gets so tacky, almost like a music video with Roxburgh as Dracula, and the whole Bond gadgets sideline is too much of a rip of.
